Swiss hotelier César Ritz dubbed the “king of hoteliers and hotelier to kings” in the hotel business, is where the Ritz-Carlton brand’s history began. With his administration of The Ritz in Paris and the Carlton Hotel in London, among others, he revolutionized luxury lodging throughout Europe. On the Hamburg-Amerika Line Ocean liners SS Amerika and SS Imperator, he and the renowned chef from his hotels, Auguste Escoffier, built a la carte restaurants under the name “Ritz-Carlton” in 1905 and 1913, respectively. With the start of World War I in 1914, the restaurants aboard the ships were forced to close. Ritz passed away in 1918, but his wife Marie kept up the habit of establishing hotels under his name.
